a closer look

Last Wednesday I woke up rushing to turn in my 6.002 p-set. Since it was a pre-lab I needed a copy of it for reference, and I didn’t feel like scanning it and being 15 minutes late to recitation. So I took out my handy Nikon D70 and took some quick shots of the pages.

I got to the last page…*chunk..ddddrrrr* *flisp* *flisp*

The. Shutter. Is. Not. Opening.

Mirror. Not. Flipping.

Camera. Broken.

Yeah…how anti-climactic is that? The last photo you ever take is a .002 pre-lab. I knew you were dangerous course 6! Psh.

Anyway, while the camera is off to Nikon to be nursed back to health, I’m borrowing The Tech’s d300 (drool) to document the building of my 8×10.

Macro shot, anyone?

Pretend that the back is floating…sort of.

A close-up of the rack and pinion (the best so far).

The knob. I love that knob.

These slots will allow the front standard to slide from left to right. The front standard will also be able to tilt, shift up and down and swing from side to side.

I hope.

These are what I worked on today. They are the small pivots that will hold the front standard upright and square. (You’ll see what I mean in a bit.)

The blue ink is on there so that it’s easier for me to see the scribe marks. The rounded ends were first cut as accurately as possible on the band saw. I then took the piece to the sander to make the rounded edges nice and smooth.

Are you seeing what I’m seeing in my head? No? Well wait a little bit…

Hey, I ended up at your blog the other night while searching for camera construction. I’ve been interested in this for a while. I’m a third year college student (2nd year art school student) majoring in sculpture and art history (hopefully). Your camera is amazing and your blog is very inspiring! I hope to construct a similar camera, although I will probably have to wait at least a semester and possibly a year. However, the wait gives me plenty of time to research designs. I may try to start with a 4×5 camera, I don’t think I am as ambitious as you. Currently, I am trying to get back into small metal work.

I think I could write down a hundred questions to ask you about this project. On an unrelated note, I think the one sentence I hear most at art school is “I suck so much at math!” You are a physics major, correct? How much wood shop experience did you have prior to this project? And your metal work is great!

I apologize if my comment is all over the place, I don’t know where to begin with what to say.

Beautiful camera! Very helpful! And very inspiring!

Did you finish the camera? I see your last entry was May 10, which sounds like its at the end of the school year.

Anyways, if you wouldn’t mind me asking you some more questions, shoot me an e-mail.

    Timorales@gmail.com.

    Thanks and good luck!

I, too, would love to know if you finished this project. So far it looks to be a beautiful camera.

I’ll be starting a 4×5 camera project in the near future, and I’m sure I’ll be reviewing your pages again for inspiration!

I am in the process of finishing it up actually…it’s a busy, busy summer…but I should hopefully get to a post within the next week.
